CEO ROUNDTABLE with Dr. Cheryl Martin, Acting Director, Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E)
On December 2, 2014, the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network of DC (DEN DC) will host the "CEO ROUNDTABLE” with Dr. Cheryl Martin, Acting Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy. Cheryl will give her views on entrepreneurship with an impact. Her talk is entitled “If It Works, Will It Matter?”
In addition to her role at ARPA-E in the U.S. Department of Energy, Dr. Martin leads ARPA-E’s Technology-to-Market program, which helps breakthrough energy technologies succeed in the marketplace.
At the December DEN DC meeting, Cheryl will discuss how ARPA-E catalyzes transformational energy technologies to enhance the economic and energy security of the United States by advancing high-potential, high-impact technologies that are too early for private sector. Cheryl’s remarks will focus on ARPA-E's technology-to-market program that supplies awardees with critical business insight and strategies to move technologies toward the market. The most innovative technologies in the world will only have impact if they make it to the market, which is why ARPA-E regularly asks, “If it works, will it matter?” Considering this key question from the start of a project leads to important questions: Such as, if it works, what will be the path to the marketplace? What type of people do you need on your team and what stakeholders do you need to know? What will be your business model? And how will you execute?
From her leadership of ARPA-E, and her previous experience with Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, a venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, CA, Cheryl will give examples of how successful ventures have considered these questions from the beginning.
Prior to joining ARPA-E, Dr. Martin was an Executive in Residence with Kleiner Perkins. Dr. Martin previously spent 20 years with Rohm and Haas, starting her career as a Senior Scientist. In 2000, Dr. Martin was named Director of Investor Relations. Later she became Director of Financial Planning. Dr. Martin was named General Manager of the company’s Adhesives and Sealants business in North America in 2007 and most recently, she was the General Manager for the Paint and Coatings Materials business in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Dr. Martin earned a B.A. in chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
